Introduction
Agreement on S&T Cooperation between Government
of Republic of India & Government of Italian Republic(
April 28,1978) provides the basis of cooperation.
Actions are underway to enlarge cooperation by concluding
a new S&T Agreement in 2003.
Implementation of the Agreement vests with Indo-Italian
Joint Committee on S&T Cooperation , serviced
jointly by Indian DST(International Cooperation Division)
& Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( Office
V General Directorate for Cultural Promotion &
Cooperation. The decisions taken at 5th Session of
this Joint Committee (held at Rome, March 11-12,2003)
are governing the implementation of Indo-Italian S&T
Program of Cooperation (POC) for the period 2002-2004.

Assessment and Microzonation, SAR Technology its
applications, High Energy Physics)
- Technologies for Monuments Conservation &

- Medicine and Health (including Medical Radiology,
Medical Biotechnology)
- Electronics and Robotics (including Information
Technology, Computer Science, Microelectronics and
Microsystems)
- Agriculture (including Agriculture Biotechnology)
- Design & Design Technology
(** Any addition areas of mutual interest can be
included through exchange of letters.)
Modes of Cooperation
Indo-Italian S&T POC 2002-2004 provides for implementing
following modes of joint activities:
- Joint Research Projects ;
- Access to and utilization of Advanced Research
Facilities (Biomolecular NMR at Centre for Magnetic
Resonance ,Florence ; Elettra Synchrotron at Sincrotrone
Trieste; Solar neutrino facility at Gran Sasso National
Laboratory Aquilla);
- Exploratory Missions of Scientists to define
new bilateral research programs;
- Joint Workshops;
- Advanced Training Programs.
- India-Trento Program for Advanced Research (ITPAR)
(with Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Province
of Trento & Indian DST sponsoring support for
microsystems, materials cience,telecommunication
and computer science joint project based exchange
visits, Bose-Romagnosi Fellowship & incremental
research infrastructure at project sites)
Soliciting joint proposals for S&T POC
Call for Proposal are notified simultaneously in
the two countries. Indian DST notifies an advertisement
for this purpose in Current Science Journal.
Guidelines and Application Format
Detailed guidelines alongwith application format
are provided at the time of Call for Proposals. Such
an information issued at the previous occasion can
be downloaded . Typical Joint Project is of 3 years
duration.
In so far as Elettra Synchrotron Facility utilization
Processing of Proposals & Project Duration
Indian & Italian Ministries executing implementation
of S&T Agreement , arrange independent technical
evaluation to arrive at jointly acceptable prioritized
list of Joint Projects/Programs to be adopted as a
component of Indo-Italian S&T POC.
Financial Support
Approved activities under the Indo-Italian S&T
POC are co-financed by Indian DST & Italian Ministry
of Foreign Affairs. (In so far as ITPAR is concerned
the Autonomous Province of Trento contributes financially
for ITPAR Workplan)
