  russia Meeting of Nobel Laureates and Students in Lindau, Germany
 

 

Each year since 1951, Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry, Physics, Physiology or Medicine have been meeting in Lindau, Germany, to discuss major issues of importance to their fields with students from around the world. The meetings include lectures by the Nobel Laureates, round-table discussions and informal small-group meetings with the Nobel Prize winners. The DST has been sending a group of students / young researchers to these meetings, since 2001.

It is planned to send a group of Indian Students and Scientists to the 57th Meeting of Nobel Laureates and Students during 1-6 July 2007, which is in the subject area of Physiology & Medicine and closely related areas. Applications are invited from bright and young students and researchers in these fields of natural sciences for availing this DST award. The lectures and discussions are at a level appropriate for students/researchers in their early research careers. More details of the meeting could be seen at www.lindau-nobel.de

Terms of Award:

The selected participants will be provided transportation, lodging (twin-sharing basis) and daily subsistence allowance, jointly by DST and Lindau Committee for the Meeting of Nobel Laureates & students. The Registration fee is waived. After the Lindau meeting, the Indian group will also visit premier German scientific institutions for one week. No escorts/ accompanying persons will be allowed with the participants.

Eligibility:

There are three categories of participants to be nominated: A. Undergraduate students B. Masters students & Doctoral Students; and C. Young Post-doctoral scientists.

Common Eligibility criteria for all the categories A, B & C above are:

Have an excellent academic record; Be fluent in English and an active participant in discussions; Show a genuine interest for science and research, show a strong commitment both to their principal field of studies and to interdisciplinary dialogue with the international academic community; Be a recipient of awards/medals/merit scholarship at University/National/International level for high academic or research achievement; be familiar with societal impacts of scientific knowledge and its applications; Be nominated by the Head (President, Vice-Chancellor, Director or Principal of respective institution; must have NOT participated in previous Lindau meetings.

Applicants who had earlier received a merit award in National Science Olympiads or have secured merit in Children Science Congresses and presently pursuing science would also be considered;

Additional eligibility requirements in each category are:

Category-A (Undergraduate Students): Should belong to top 10% of their class and possess a strong general knowledge of natural sciences and have done some research work (Should attach appropriate certificate for the same);

Category-B (Master’s and Doctoral Students): Have excellent academic accomplishments; have produced outstanding research; and

Category-C (Postdoctoral scientists): Have some postdoctoral experience; have published results in widely recognized journals; have presented research results in scientific international conferences; have acquired solid experience in teaching and tutoring;

Candidates who have already availed the DST Award for participation in the Meeting of Nobel Laureates and Students may not apply.

Application process:

A complete application consists of: a) Application (Seven hard copies in prescribed format) - One copy duly forwarded by the Head of the institution; b) One set of copies of the awards/certificates substantiating the information provided in the application duly attested by Head of the institution; c) Letter of reference from an academician or scientist acquainted with the applicant in a sealed cover; d) a soft copy of the application form (not certificates) as email attachment to [email protected]

The hardcopies of the applications must be submitted to: R K Sharma, Scientist-C, International Division, (Room No. 4 B) Department of Science & Technology, Technology Bhavan, New Mehrauli Road, New Delhi 110016 latest by 1700 Hrs on 31st Jan 2007. Incomplete applications in any respect and received after last date will be summarily rejected.
