Introduction

Agreement on Enhanced Cooperation between Indian Department of Science & Technology & Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) singned on Nov.25,1999 provides the basis of 20 Fellowships annually to Indian Mathematicians and Theoretical Physicists for participation in ICTP Training and in-house Research Programs at ICTP Campus in Trieste for a period between four to six week.

Implementation of the Agreement vests with Indian DST (International Cooperation Division) & ICTP . The decisions on selection and co-financing of Fellowships to Indian candidates are taken jointly; Indian side in turn is guided by recommendations of DST's Expert Committee .

Areas of Cooperation

Fellowships to Indian candidates are based on ICTP Scientific Calendar / In-house ICTP Research Program which are of particular interest to scientific and technological developments in India. Typical scientific field featuring in ICTP Program are:

  • Physics of Condensed Matter;
  • Physics of High & Intermediate Energies;
  • Mathematics;
  • Physics and Environment-including Earth Geophysics, Climatology, Meteorology Physics of Weather & Climate;
  • Applied Physics including microelectronics, synchrotron radiation, lasers, fibre optics for communication

Soliciting applications

Call for Proposal are notified both by Indian DST & ICTP Trieste. Indian DST notifies an advertisement for this purpose in Current Science Journal as per following time table:

First Call in March to cover ICTP Scientific Events in July-December ;& Second Call in August to cover ICTP Scientific Events in January-June of next year.

The current call is posted in Current Science August 25,2003 Issue http://tejas.serc.iisc.ernet.in/~currsci as well as on DST website http: //dst.gov.in

Guidelines and Application Format

The application format are provided at the time of Call for Proposals. Such an information issued for the current call can be downloaded from website http://dst.gov.in. The ICTP Scientific Calendar can be downloaded from ICTP Website http://www.ictp.trieste.it . Details can be obtained by sending e.mail to smr @ ictp.trieste.it, The ICTP Scientific Calendar contains the smr numbers of all the conferences

For a valid application,

  • Indian applicant must be of age of upto 40 years; working in institution of education & research in India;
  • Duration of visit to ICTP Trieste is to be of 4-6 week ;
  • Application needs to be submitted 5 months before the date of commencement of the event to DST
  • Applicant is to furnish a copy of the announcement of the ICTP Training Activity in which participation is desired & 'No objection ' from the concerned administrative authority granting permission to the applicant to accept the Fellowship in event of his / her selection.

Processing of Application

Indian DST & ICTP Trieste arrange independent evaluation of scientific merit of the Indian applications , to arrive at jointly acceptable candidates for award & co-funding of Fellowship to Indian candidates under DST-ICTP Agreement. On Indian side DST Expert Committee evaluates the scientific merit of the application using criteria including:

  • Academic & educational record -graduation onwards;
  • Record of Research;
  • Applicant from less endowed institution (universities);
  • On-going R&D projects with the applicant;
  • Field of ICTP Scientific Activity- New emerging topic;
  • Capability building in basic research & or application oriented topic in area of national relevance;
  • Prospects of bilateral scientific collaboration.

Financial Support

Candidate selected for Fellowship under DST-ICTP Agreement will be jointly financed with :

Indian DST providing air fare from place of work in India to Trieste and
back by excursion class and the shortest route;

ICTP Trieste providing standard local hospitality in Trieste for the period of stay ( free shared accomodation; subsistence allowance and health insurance).
